The oral microbiome refers to the community of microorganisms living in your child’s mouth. These tiny organisms include bacteria, viruses, and fungi. While some bacteria are harmful, many are beneficial and support oral health. The balance of good and bad microorganisms can change due to diet, hygiene habits, or illness. Managing this microbiome can play an important role in supporting your child’s oral and overall wellness.

You play a key role in shaping your child’s oral microbiome! By encouraging good habits and providing age-appropriate education, you can set them up for a lifetime of balanced oral bacteria that support their body’s wellness. Here are some important steps you should take:
 
  • Teach your child to brush twice daily and floss once a day.
  • Provide water as the beverage of choice in your household and limit your child’s consumption of sugary foods and drinks.
  • Introduce a variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains into meals.
  • Help your child develop a taste for prebiotic and probiotic foods, including fermented items like yogurt, aged cheese, sauerkraut, and kimchi.
  • Take your child to see their pediatric dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup.
